Creating Wellness in the San Diego Home

Now, more than ever, is the time to carve out niches of wellness and relaxation, particularly in our homes. The impact of the past couple of years, combined with the prevalence of hustle culture, has helped us to recognize that we all benefit when we have spaces of peace and calm around us.

Read on to find some easy-to-implement wellness practices for your own home.

Switch to Clean Products

Clean products are no longer limited to the cleaning industry. There are countless brands that have embraced clean production and operation practices. Need your java in the morning? Look for local coffee roasters that prioritize ethical farming practices who support local farmers who use clean ingredients. Check out Lifeboost Coffee, a company that prioritizes providing clean coffee while farming sustainably. More of a Rosé gal? Dry Farm Wines has strict criteria for their farms and produced wines; try a completely new wine experience that is free of toxic additives with low sulfates, and get an additional bottle for only a penny!

For a variety of local products, check out some of the great farmers’ markets that San Diego offers. Stop by Hillcrest Farmers Market to check out over 175 vendors at San Diego’s largest farmers market, or Ocean Beach Farmers Market which has been open for over 30 years.

Declutter and Donate

Thanks to the organizing queens from The Home Edit the act of decluttering has gone mainstream, and we are here for it! Showing us how to get our kids involved in the process? Sorting by color and organizing in rainbows? Win-win-win! Local design service Babe & Bungalow offers organizing and design sessions that fit your lifestyle, and even helps to create sustainable systems.

Air Purification

Air purifiers use a fan to suck in air that is run through filters to reduce the presence of dust, dander, and more from the air. They have a variety of benefits, from reducing allergens to reducing odors. When it comes to choosing an air purifier, Mila is our jam, we have one in every room! SD Air Quality is a local company that offers home purification, reducing dust, allergens, and smells, with a variety of treatments.

Embrace Blue Zone Ideas

The Blue Zones have been identified as five very different areas of the world where people live the longest. They share the commonalities of the Power 9, or lifestyle components that they all share. Celebrating loved ones and a focus on plant-based meals are two ways to embrace the Blue Zone’s lifestyle. The Beach Cities has been certified as a Blue Zones Community; could San Diego be next?

Plants: Nature’s Air Purifier

NASA has a list of its favorite air purification plants that range from the tall Areca Palm to the planter-friendly Money Plant. Many of the plants on the list are available at local spots, but our favorite stop is Pigment for their welcoming boho vibe and selection of plants.

Grow, Baby, Grow!

Green thumbs, unite! Gardening is a grounding activity that helps us reconnect with the earth, while being outside in nature helps to recharge our cells and helps us relax. Even those in small spaces can embrace their inner garden by using a farmstand (hydroponic tower) like Lettuce Grow; only four square feet of space is needed! Check out North Park Nursery to grow your plant collection, and before you take your new plant babies home swing by Communal Coffee for a lemon almond latte and apricot toast.

Local Produce Love

San Diego is lucky to be home to some of the best produce around. Get ready to try some new recipes with fresh produce from local farms and growers. Farm Fresh to You offers a variety of boxes, including their Traditional CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Box, No Cooking Box, and Snack Pack. Yasukochi Family Farm has been supplying responsibly grown produce since 1927; they offer regular and jumbo CSA boxes. Check out a list of local San Diego CSA delivery farms here.

Clean Beauty

Artificial or added fragrance is found in many common products. To reduce skin irritation or fragrance-induced headaches, try switching to clean beauty products with limited fragrance. And that doesn’t mean your products have to be boring! Try products with essential oils with natural scents. We love Shop Good for effortless wellness where you can find clean beauty, essential oils, and even clean items for your littlest household members.
